Community of Practice

SWS is a membership orgaization, and those members make up our wilderness stewardship 'Community of Practice'.  Our Community is comprised of all manner of professionals working at various levels of capacity in wilderness.  From wilderness rangers on the ground to wilderness leads in Washington D.C., from botanists and restoration ecologists to NGO stewardship crew members and executive directors, our Community of Practice reflects the vast expertise in this field.  Together we set and maintain the standards for wilderness stewardship.

Our members sit on our working Committees, continually challenging each other to define and educate about all aspects of wilderness management.  They also come together at events throughout the year (from local pint nights to 3-day Wild and Scenic river trips) to discuss current wilderness management issues and brainstorm innovative solutions.  All members automatically gain entrance to Wliderness Connect, an online community of wilderness professionals managed by the University of Montana's Wilderness Institute that allows for 24/7, 365 discussion of professional issues in the wilderness field.

Members themselves gain career advanacement tailored to strengthen them as wildernes stewards wherever they are in their career path.  Our Student and Seasonal members receive discounts on field gear and medical training and become professional mentees of our Professional, Retiree and Charter members.  Our Professional, Retiree and Charter members become certified contract instructors for our Wilderness Ranger Academies, and mentor young wilderness professionals.

As our Community of Practice continues grow, so too will a wilderness stewardship standard of excellence become more solidfied.
