Meet us on campus at 9:00 am to travel to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe Bison Range, where we will engage in a day of activities.

Evening Performance: Kiera Kolson

Location: Schreiber Gym, University of Montana campus
Kiera-Dawn Kolson is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist, performer, and young leader. For over 20 years, she has been involved territorially, nationally and internationally in advocacy work on Indigenous people's rights, the environment, cultural preservation, decolonization, and empowerment through art and culture. She is passionate about the revitalization of Indigenous heritage and will continue to inspire the next generations to live their gifts by living hers.

Morning Reflection

Each morning we'll engage together in meditation, reflection, and culture sharing. This morning, we encourage you to reflect on your experience at the NWW thus far, and pick a thought or two that has stayed with you to write on a reflection card and drop in the reflection card boxes. We'll have them available at the Payne Center.

National Park Service and US Forest Service Collaboration with Tribes

Hear from Mike Reynolds (NPS) and Reed Robinson (USFS) on new ways the National Park Service and US Forest Service are partnering with Tribes.

Facilitated by Regina Lopez Whiteskunk, a panel comprised of Reed Robinson, Tim Ryan, Alfred Lomahquahu, Jennifer Harrington and Stephanie Barron will discuss whether and how designated wilderness can center Indigenous people and Lifeways.

Powwow Dancers

This morning we will be joined by powwow dancers Zach Rides at the Door, Ella Sherin, Riley Werk, and Brandi Johnson, who will share powwow etiquette and information with us, and perhaps show us a little of the dancing.

We'll do our welcome for the day and any announcements together outside the Payne Center, and then disperse for concurrent sessions.

Beyond Consultation
10:15-12:00 pm
Location: Payne Family Native American Center room 105 (main floor), University of Montana campus
The Beyond Consultation track explores different and meaningful models of collaboration, from legal requirements to best practices and relationship building, and beyond.
The first third of the day, from 10:15 to 12:00, will be Establishing a Baseline: An Intro to Free, Prior & Informed Consent. This section will be a panel discussion with Rob Roy Smith, Jennifer Harrington, Blair Libby, Jaime Martin and Maija Lukin.

Management Frameworks
10:15-12:00 pm
Location: Payne Family Native American Center room 011 (basement), University of Montana campus
The Management Frameworks track focuses on traditional and innovative management frameworks to foster wilderness stewardship in inclusive ways. It will utilize case studies and examples of alternative frameworks to explore how to enable the design and implementation of co-management, or the protection of traditional Indigenous values in wilderness.
​
The morning portion of this track includes a welcome from Fernando Sanchez and Ann Schwaller (10:15-10:30), The Wilderness Society IMAGO Initiative with Meda DeWitt (10:30-10:50), The CSKT Bison Range with Stephanie Gillin (10:50-11:10), Wilderness Co-Stewardship at Glacier Bay National Park with Adrienne Lindholm (11:20-11:40), and Co-Management at Grand Portage National Monument with Heather Boyd (11:40-12:00).

Lifeways
10:15-12:00 pm
Location: Payne Family Native American Center room 103 (main floor), University of Montana campus
The Lifeways track explores aspects of Indigenous Lifeways and how they relate to wilderness and wildlands.
​
From 10:15 to 12, Elizabeth Azzuz, Sean Parks, Dagny Signorelli and Alyssa Worsham will discuss the application of cultural fire and ignite the conversation around prescribed fire in wilderness.

Beyond Consultation

The Beyond Consultation track explores different and meaningful models of collaboration, from legal requirements to best practices and relationship building, and beyond.

The second third of the day, from 2:00 to 3:30, will be Collaboration to Co-Management: Deep Dives into Collaborative Problem Solving. This section will include a small group activity facilitated by Rob Roy Smith, Jaime Martin, and Jake Rayapati, followed by a presentation by Mike Durglo and Anne Carlson.
​
The last third of the day, from 3:45 to 5:00, will comprise two presentations discussing Before & Beyond Consultation. The first presentation will be: Implications and Implementations of the Doctrine of Discovery & Treaty Rights with Clarita Lefthand Begay and Dara Craig. The second presentation will be: Models of Rematriation with Kunsang Lama and Jesse Brisbois.

Management Frameworks

The afternoon portion of this track includes Martin Nie (2:20-2:40), The Mission Mountains Tribal Wilderness with Stephanie Gillin (2:40-3:00), Fire Belongs to the People: Restoring Human Fire Relationships in the Klamath Mountains of Northern California with Will Harling (3:00-3:20), and a panel discussion with Q&A session and wrap up to close out the day (3:30-5:00).

Lifeways
2:00-4:00 pm
Location: Payne Family Native American Center room 202 (upstairs), University of Montana campus
The Lifeways track explores aspects of Indigenous Lifeways and how they relate to wilderness and wildlands.
​
The afternoon portion of this track will feature Diana Doan Crider discussing the Story of the Acorn, a story-telling view of her holistic research on bears in Mexico, the communities that surround them, and what they taught her about research and knowledge (2:00-2:45); followed by Tyler Lau, Alex Kim and Vasu Sojitra discussing Recreation Culture: Shifting from a Culture of Consumption to a Culture of Care (2:50-4:00), and Rosalyn la Pier and Nicole Benally presenting about Cultural Food Sovereignty, and what it means for protected area management (4:00-5:00).

Planetarium Shows & Poster Session
7:00-9:00 pm
Location: Payne Family Native American Center, University of Montana campus
We'll have a fun-filled evening at the Payne Center, rotating between the Star-Gazing Room and Planetarium for Astronomical Perspectives in Native American Traditions, and the lawn outside the Payne Center for a poster session on all of the interesting research happening in our field.
The Star Gazing Room and Planetarium will feature two shows narrated by Blackfeet Knowledge Holder Leo Bird. Woman who Married a Star (Venus) will show from 7 to 7:45, and Bunch Brothers (Pleiades) will show from 8 to 8:45. Both shows are 45 minutes long and can fit 30 people. Sign up through the Logistics Form.

Come with us to the Kyiyo Powwow, put on every year by University of Montana students and widely attended. We'll meet at the Payne Center and walk over together - your ticket to the Powwow is covered by your NWW registration.
